STORM/HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
South Carolina is most prone to tropical storms, hurricanes, and floods from June through November each year. The South Carolina Department of Health (DPH) urges residents to prepare for potential storms. Although storms and hurricanes cannot be prevented, you can take steps to protect yourself and your family.
Understanding Shelter Options During Emergencies
Shelters are typically regarded as the last resort. The Department of Public Health (DPH) advises individuals needing to evacuate to have alternative arrangements ready, such as staying with family, friends, or in a hotel during a disaster. No emergency shelter can provide the same amenities and comforts as your home.
When preparing for an evacuation in your area, keep in mind the essential items you may require for daily living. For those unable to secure alternative accommodations during an emergency evacuation, there are two shelter options available:
-
Medical Equipment Power Shelters (MEPS)
-
General Population Shelters
Medical Equipment Power Shelter (MEPS) is a specialized emergency shelter that offers limited support for individuals who require backup power for medical devices, refrigeration of medications, or specialized/hospital beds. This includes individuals who:
-
Have medical conditions that necessitate electricity support and/or
-
Use a hospital bed or specialized medical bed at home
In the event of an emergency, please call our Triage Line at 1-833-351-9990 to check your eligibility for MEPS. Eligible individuals should bring essential items for daily living to the designated MEPS location.
